Alcohol percentage: 12.5%
Area:
Godello is seen by many as Spain’s finest indigenous white grape and performs spectacularly well in the cool climate district of Valdeorras. Grapes used for Pagos del Galir Godello come from their “premier cru” A Malosa vineyard in the Village of Entoma. Hand harvested, the juice with skins is cold macerated for around 24 hours before fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel, followed by 4 months lees ageing. There is no oak.
Grape variety:
100% Godello
Producer:
Virgen Pagos del Galir is in the DO of Valdeorras, in Galicia, in the cool northwest of Spain. It is part of the highly respected C.V.N.E (Rioja) empire which was founded in 1879 and remains in the family hands of the original descendants today. The winemaker is Miguel Tenda Baena – an expert in the local grapes Godello and Mencia – who is supported by the technical director Jorge Navascués.
Vintage:
The 2022 harvest started the first week of September and was a year marked by drought but with average temperatures during the day, and cool temperatures at night. This “diurnal” range promoted fine fruit ripening whilst maintaining high level of acidity. It was one of the healthiest and purest vintages of modern times with lower than average yields.
Maturity potential:
Drink now and over the next 18 months when at its freshest. Serve chilled by not too cold.
