Valdespino has been a famous name in Jerez for centuries, and has been owned by the Estevez family since 1999. They are one of the few sherry houses to own almost all their own vineyards. This obviously gives them full quality control from start to finish of the product.
The Bottle Shop rating:
If Sherry could get its act together this would be called something like a ‘Rich Oloroso’. For now it’s a “Medium Sweet, Very Old Oloroso Blend”. The term medium-sweet doesn’t do this wine justice.
It’s rich, nutty and just off-dry, but not so sweet as to put anyone off.
It’s made from an Oloroso solera that averages well over 20 years (it’s a ‘VOS’ which is a label only for 20+ years wines); blended wth around 10% old Pedro Ximenez to give the luscious tang.
For most people dry Oloroso and dry Amontillado are just a touch too dry, this is a brilliant and commercially viable style of Sherry that needs promotion and support.
