100% Godello
Producer:
In just 20 years Rafael Palacios has built a reputation as not only the the finest producer in Valdeorras in Galicia (northwest Spain) but the greatest champion of the highly acclaimed indigenous white grape Godello.
His rise to pre-eminence stated in 2004 when he first invested in the Val do Bibei. Today, he owns 32 separate parcels of Godello spread over 19.5 hectares. Vines are planted on old, steep, stony terraces – made up of decomposed granite with some sand and parcels of clay - located in the districts of O Bolo and Santa Cruz do Bolo. Several plots are of very old vines - these are referred to as “Sortes”.
Working to both organic and biodynamic practices the Godello for the Louro blend comes from parcels at 600 metres altitude and an average of 25 years of age. Hand harvested grapes were pressed and fermented in 350lt French oak foudres (10% new) and aged on lees for 4 months.
The Bottle Shop rating:
This is a magnificent wine – dry, textural and creamy with bright stone fruit and citrus notes, measured, lightly toasty oak elements, and above all fine, refreshing acidity which brings the whole wine together. Long and refined.
This wine is ready to drink now but can be kept and enjoyed over the next 3 years. Serve chilled but not too cold and in good sized glasses.
