Hand harvested grapes were crushed and cold soaked for 2-3 days before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine was matured for 12 months in a mix of medium toast French oak barriques (all second and third fill, none new) – around 65% - and the rest was aged in concrete tulip shaped vats. The wine was bottled unfiltered.
Producer:
“Navitas” means energy, birth, zeal and creation. The driving forces behind Navitas are winemaker Maria Dimitriadis, and oenologist Grigoris Sotiriadis. Both originate from Thessaloniki. The 16 hectare vineyard (formerly owned by Maria’a father) is located at Litochoro, in the Pieria region of Macedonia, northern Greece. The Xinomavro vineyards are organically run (since 2021), planted in three separate parcels by soil type (loam, gravel, limestone) at altitudes of between 100 and 400 metres in the foothills of Mount Olympus. Here the high diurnal range (high: low) produces grapes of great ripeness but with high levels of acidity.
The Bottle Shop rating:
This wine has an amazing perfume with bold Morello cherry and violet notes which carry through onto the palate. There is a nice touch of sweet spice and olive too. There is a real Burgundian touch here. Tannins are fine grained, and although full bodied it is rounded with a long, textured finish. Ready to drink now but can be kept and drink over the next 3-5 years as it becomes more savoury.
