Knappstein is a well-established and respected name based in the Clare Valley in South Australia. In the early days (early 1970’s) Tim Knappstein rapidly gained recognition for pioneering wine styles (including both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon) based at the old Enterprise Brewery premises from 1976. He eventually sold out to Wolf Blass, and it is now owned by a Chinese company and all winemaking is overseen – since 2019 - by Michael Kane (not a lot of people know that) of Margaret River (Western Australia fame). Today it is simply known as the Knappstein Enterprise Winery.
Despite the changes, the wines have always been sourced exclusively from the same estate owned vineyards, with a total of 130 hectares planted through the Clare Valley. The Clare Valley Riesling comes from a selection of different vineyards located throughout the valley. Vines age is 38 years on average.
Vintage:
Vinification is cool fermented with inoculated yeast, in stainless steel for around three months (including some lees aging). There is just a touch (3g/lt) of residual sugar.
The Bottle Shop rating:
The 2022 was a classic Riesling vintage in the Clare – this is an exuberant and highly aromatic example with lifted citrus lime, medium body, very zesty and crisp, with intensity and vitality – a benchmark style.
Serve chilled and enjoy now and over the next 3 years.
