Alcohol percentage: 14.5%
Organic
Area:
Fontodi is in Panzano, a small village in the very centre of Chianti Classico, the beautiful rolling hills between Florence and Siena. Fontodi’s vineyards are all in the prime area, the ‘Conca d’Oro’ (golden shell).
Grape variety:
100% Sangiovese, aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months.
Producer:
Giovanni Manetti’s family have owned the estate since 1969, investing the money made from their terracotta factory nearby. Everything Giovanni does is meticulously planned to ensure the highest possible quality – rarely have I met such a professional operator (in the best possible sense) in the wine world. All his vineyards are now organic and he is doing trials with biodynamics. Flaccianello is their flagship wine, the selection of their best grapes.
Maturity potential:
2020-2030.
The Bottle Shop rating:
Perhaps the greatest wine from Tuscany (assuming you want Tuscan wine not Cabernet). And although still young, a vintage that is approachable at an early stage.
