Area:
Sondraia is Poggio al Tesoro’s flagship wine. Most of the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit for this blend was sourced from the 3 hectares Via Bolgherese vineyard situated at 56 metres above sea level. Composed of coarse red sand, the soils are rich in gravel, well drained and have a clay layer at a depth of 120 centimetres. The planting density is in line with Bordeaux at 9,000 vines per hectare. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and the remaining Cabernet Sauvignon were sourced from the 12 hectares Le Sondraie vineyard situated 35 metres above sea level. These soils are free draining, a mixture of clay and sandy silt, with high levels of magnesium and iron. The vines, overall, have an average age of 25 years.
After destemming and soft pressing, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at 28-30°C for 12-15 days. The wine was transferred to French Allier oak barriques (of which 70% were new) for 22 months in barrel, then a further 9 months in bottle, prior to release. The final blend was 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc.
Grape variety:
50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot.
Producer:
The Poggio al Tesoro property in Bolgheri was acquired in 2002 by the Allegrini family, one of Italy’s top wine families, who prior to this acquisition had been renting a neighbouring vineyard.
The Bottle Shop rating:
Dry and full bodied, this wine has bold blackcurrant aromas and flavour, a nice spice and herbal edge with fine grained tannins, a mineral core, and lightly toasty oak. This is mouth-coating, well balanced, and persistent. Just entering its drinking window but can easily be kept and aged for another 5-8 years.
