Capezzana is in the Carmignano region, 24km’s north west of Florence. The area is distinct from neighbouring Chianti, having a slightly warmer climate, especially in autumn, allowing for the full maturity of not just Sangiovese but also the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grape variety:
75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Canaiolo; matured for 6-8 months in very large, old, French oak barrels. Followed by 3 months in bottle
Producer:
The gorgeous 100 hectare Capezzana estate has been owned by the Contini Bonacossi family for centuries. Barco Reale (the name of their less expensive red) means ‘royal palace’ and refers to the property of the Medici Grand Dukes, who were (unsurprisingly) previous owners.
The Bottle Shop rating:
Savoury and serious, but also bright and modern. This is (like so many Tuscan examples) a great food wine.
